Scholar Bio
Joe Reardon from Liberty, Missouri, studied Biology and Global Health at Duke. He is a graduate of the Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Missouri. Joe has studied in the Genome Revolution and Global Health FOCUS Programs, and with Duke and the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. In the laboratory of Prof. Jen-Tsan Ashley Chi at the Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, he has collaborated on investigations of the role of microRNA in sickle cell disease and malaria. He is also a clinical phlebotomist.
Joe was Assistant Chair of Health and Safety Services for Duke Red Cross, where he expanded a program providing CPR, First Aid, and AED training in English and Spanish on Duke's campus and in the Durham community.
Thanks to generous support from the AB Duke Research Fund, Joe worked with Proyecto Puentes de Salud, a project coordinated by the UNC School of Medicine and aimed at better understanding risk factors for chronic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and depression in Juventino Rosas, Guanajuato, central Mexico.
He is involved with the Catholic community, and has been a pianist and Director of Service and Social Justice for the Duke Catholic Student Center.
Joe believes that the AB Duke Scholarship Program has been an excellent opportunity for him to meet brilliant minds and find extra support for ground-breaking work in his future and vocation of resolving global health inequities.
Joe entered Harvard Medical School in 2009. He is very interested in emergency medicine and global health inequalities.
